How it works
What suspension bushes do — and when they need replacing
Suspension bushes sit between moving suspension components and their mounting points, allowing controlled movement while helping isolate noise, vibration and road shock. You'll find them throughout the suspension — in control arms, sway bars, trailing arms, subframes and other mounting points, depending on the vehicle.
Most are made from rubber, which naturally deteriorates with age, kilometres and constant movement. Over time a bush can crack, soften, compress or separate from its sleeve, allowing more movement than it should. Depending on where the bush is fitted, that can show up as knocking or creaking, changes in steering feel, or uneven tyre wear.
Bushes are often picked up while a workshop is inspecting the suspension or carrying out other steering and suspension work. And with so many different bushes and positions across different vehicles, having the right one available can be just as important as identifying what's worn.
Trade tip: check the surrounding bushes
If one bush is showing its age, it's worth checking the others around it while the suspension is being inspected. Bushes on the same vehicle have often seen similar kilometres and conditions, and finding another worn bush while everything is already apart can save doing the job twice.
Signs of a worn suspension bush
- A knock or clunk over bumps
- Creaking or rattling from the suspension
- Changes in steering feel or stability
- Uneven or accelerated tyre wear
These symptoms can point to worn suspension bushes, but the vehicle should always be properly inspected to confirm the cause.
The detail
Made to move where it should.
Rubber bonded to metal allows the suspension to move while controlling unwanted movement and helping isolate noise and vibration.
About our suspension bushes
With more than 500 live part numbers, our suspension bush range covers control arms, sway bars, trailing arms, subframes and other suspension mounting points across a wide range of vehicles.
There are a lot of different bushes underneath a car, and they're not all simple rubber sleeves. Different positions call for different shapes, sizes and designs, so our range is built around what the original application requires.
Built to match the original
Getting a suspension bush right isn't just about making it fit the hole. Its dimensions, rubber characteristics and construction all affect how much movement it allows and how the suspension behaves.
Our bushes are matched to the original application in fit, form and function. Where the design uses rubber bonded to metal, the rubber is vulcanised to the metal under heat and pressure to create a strong, lasting bond.
The shape matters too. Voids, sleeves and other features are there for a reason, so we match the original design rather than treating every bush as a simple piece of rubber.
