How it works
What centre bearings do — and when they need replacing
On many rear- and all-wheel-drive vehicles, the tailshaft is made in two or more sections. The centre bearing supports the shaft between those sections, while the rubber around it helps absorb movement and vibration through the driveline.
Over time, the bearing can wear and the rubber support can deteriorate, crack or soften. When that happens, the tailshaft can develop more movement than it should, which may show up as vibration, noise or a clunk through the driveline.
Centre bearings are often picked up while a workshop is investigating a driveline vibration or already has the vehicle in for tailshaft or universal-joint work. Once the tailshaft is coming out, having the right centre bearing available can keep the job moving without waiting for another part.
Trade tip: check the rest of the tailshaft
If the tailshaft is already out, it's worth checking the universal joints, couplings and other supports at the same time. They're all part of the same driveline, and finding another worn component while everything is apart can save pulling it out again later.
Signs of a worn centre bearing
- Vibration through the vehicle that changes with road speed
- A rumble or noise from the driveline
- A clunk on take-off or during changes in load
- Excessive movement around the centre support
These symptoms can point to a worn centre bearing or support, but the driveline should always be properly inspected to confirm the cause.

That's why we match the complete assembly to the original application — from the bearing and rubber support through to the bracket dimensions and mounting points.
Where the rubber is bonded to the surrounding metal, it's vulcanised under heat and pressure to create a strong, lasting bond.
