How it works

What power steering hoses do — and when they need replacing

A power steering hose carries fluid between the pump, steering rack and reservoir. The high-pressure hose delivers fluid to the steering system, while the return hose carries it back.

These hoses deal with heat, pressure and constant engine movement. Over time, the rubber can harden and crack, while fittings and crimps can begin to leak. Left too long, a small weep can become a failed hose and a much bigger problem.

Power steering hose problems often show up as heavy steering, pump noise or fluid under the vehicle. Having the right replacement on hand means the workshop can get the job done without waiting around for a hose to be sourced.

Trade tip: check the system while you're there

A leaking hose can mean low or contaminated fluid, so check the fluid condition and pump while the hose is being replaced. And make sure the fittings and connections match — especially on the high-pressure side.

Signs of a failing power steering hose

  • Power steering fluid leaking or pooling
  • Heavy or notchy steering
  • A whine or groan from the pump
  • Cracked, swollen or weeping hose

Spot these and it's worth checking the hoses before a small leak becomes a bigger problem.

Power Steering Hoses

About our power steering hoses

With over 100 power steering hoses in the range, Boonma covers high- and low-pressure applications across a growing range of vehicles. Each hose is matched to the vehicle for the correct routing, fittings and connections, with the hose and crimps built to handle the heat and pressure of the steering system.

Built to match the original

A power steering hose has to do more than fit. The hose needs to handle continuous heat and pressure, the crimps need to seal properly, and the fittings need to line up with the vehicle without being forced into place.

That's why each hose is matched against the original for its length, routing, fittings and connection points — so it fits where it should and connects the way it should.
